4.4.2 Bottom-up methods
The starting point of any bottom-up method is to identify failure modes at the component level.  For each failure mode, the corresponding effect on performance is deduced for the appropriate system level.  The "bottom-up" method is rigorous in identifying all single-failure modes, because it can rely on parts lists or other checklists.  In the initial stages of development, the analysis may be qualitative in nature and deal with functional failures.  Later, as the component design details become available a quantitative analysis can be undertaken.
